The SPILL Tarot exhibition is a large format photographic display of the full deck of cards: 22 Major Arcana images, and the uncut printers’ sheets of the Minor Arcana.

Displacements presents excerpts from Helena Hunter’s previous performance works: The Other Room, Tracing Shadows and dis-locate. This unique performative exhibition is conceived as a single cycle made up of three separate fragments accompanied by videos, photographs, costumes, and other objects and props connected to each work.

Helena Hunter returns to FEM to screen a film of her latest work dis-locate and to present the work of four emerging artists from London, UK.

dis-locate film
dis-locate is a live performance that celebrates the transitory, the ever shifting, and explores the idea of dis-location as an empowered and disruptive state. The film is 30 mins long and features original sound by Mark Peter Wright, Sonic Arts, British Composer of The Year 2009 and is filmed and edited by Lisa Cazzato Vieyra.

Selected artists
Helena Hunter taught Hrafnhildur Ben, Lauren Barri Holstein and Nathalia Mello on the MA Dance Theatre: Performance and The Body course led by Dr. Martin Hargreaves at Trinity Laban London, she also supervised their work as part of their final MA showcase. Poppy Jackson was a participant on Hunter’s professional development scheme: Practice-based Research for Emerging Artists supported by the Live Art Development Agency.

Helena performed The Other Room as a durational piece at The Barbican Art Gallery as part of the Surreal House Exhibition on 10th June 2010. For this reworking of the piece Helena performed directly underneath Rebecca Horn’s Concert for Anarchy and incorporated the sounds from the work into the performance. The floor underneath The Concert for Anarchy was covered in 15 litres of fluid and Helena repeatedly attempted to stand up and tap dance for the duration of 1 hr, constantly falling, failing and trying to dance.

The Surreal House Exhibition featured work by a host of artists, architects and film makers including Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell and Maya Deren, as well as contemporary figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Rebecca Horn, Edward Kienholz and Rem Koolhaas.

Helena presented a reworking of dis-locate at Déda UK the dance house of the East Midlands in Oct 2010. This new version of the performance featured a section of movement choreographed in collaboration with the performers who appeared in the work: Lauren Davis, Antonia Wilson, Louise Mothersole, and Anais Lalange-all graduates from the Drama Department at Queen Mary, University of London.

This version of the work was performed without the chemical reactions that were featured in the premiere at Chelsea Theatre in 2009.  During the reworking of dis-locate Helena focused on how the ideas of transformation, flux and processes inherent in the chemical reactions could be embodied in the movement language of the work. Helena would like to thank the performers, Queen Mary University of London and Chelsea Theatre for their support in the development of this reworking of the piece.

Helena has recently become an Associate Artist at Chelsea Theatre and recently assisted with the selection of emerging artists for the Sacred Season 2010. Chelsea Theatre is London’s theatre for Live Art, and is dedicated to commissioning, producing and presenting the freshest and most innovative artists, both nationally and internationally. They have hosted some of the biggest names in contemporary performance from artists including Ron Athey, Franko B, Bobby Baker, Gob Squad, Lone Twin, Goat Island and Annie Sprinkle.

Chelsea Theatre is dedicated to fostering new voices, with specific attention to Live Art and with a dedicated community programme of complementary workshops, activities and events.

A one-day conference is part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Beyond Text programme, organized by QMUL PhD candidates Johanna Linsley and Helena Walsh.

During the conference, academic panels will alternate with artists presenting on relevant aspects of their practices. Other confirmed GOBSMACKED contributors include Aine Phillips, Silke Mansholt, Chris Goode, Mat Fraser, Lena Simic and Brian Lobel.
